Letter, 10/31: Kerrey’s record on abortion

Much has been written that the Nebraska U.S. Senate race is about character. We have a clear choice in the Senate race: A choice between a candidate who is solidly pro-life or a politician who sided with the abortion lobby in the U.S. Senate for 12 years.

Each candidate’s position on this issue gives us a window into the heart.

Deb Fischer is a mother of three and has been a consistent and reliable advocate for life in the Nebraska Legislature. Her work in the Legislature has helped to encourage women to make better-informed decisions and promote a culture of life in Nebraska. She has compiled a 100 percent pro-life record and the support of notable pro-life organizations across the state.

While in the U.S. Senate, Bob Kerrey assembled a decidedly pro-choice record that has earned him a 100 percent rating from both Planned Parenthood and NARAL. He voted five times against banning partial-birth abortion and supports using taxpayer money to pay for abortions.

Kerrey’s views are out of sync with most Nebraskans, including many of the pro-life Democrats who Sen. Deb Fischer worked with in the Legislature.

I remember that Bob Kerrey was pro-life when he ran for governor back in the 1980s. But he’s changed since those days. This race truly is about character: Deb Fischer is the only candidate with the integrity we need to build a culture of life in Washington, D.C., and protect Nebraska’s unborn children.

Former Gov. Kay Orr, Lincoln

With all due respect to Nebraska’s former Governor, her Comments about Bob Kerrey simply are not true.

Governor Orr is misrepresenting Bob Kerrey’s record and as his biographer, I am more than familiar with the Good Senator’s votes.

Beyond that, as a Pro-Life Democrat who served as the 1st Congressional Democratic Candidate for Congress in 2010 and met thousands of Nebraskans personally, I can state unequivocally that – in fact, Bob Kerrey’s views are simpatico with most Nebraskans.

As a wounded American veteran who earned this nation’s highest military honor – the Medal of Honor – Bob Kerrey understands the sanctity of life as well as Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz.

If, as you say, Governor, this Senate race is about character, then truly Bob Kerrey is the candidate with integrity who understands that building a culture of life in Washington, D.C. requires visionary men and women who understand the necessity of working closely with those with whom one disagrees.

This was the case with Eunice Kennedy Shriver – a life-long Pro-Life advocate/activist – and her beloved brother Ted Kennedy – who cast votes she disagreed with; yet, she understood his over-arching, life-affirming rationale; and she respected – not vilified – him for it.

As the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation’s “Writer-In-Residence” for Eunice Kennedy Shriver – who hired me after reading my Kerrey biography – I can say from personal knowledge that Mrs. Shriver literally adored Bob Kerrey.

Mrs. Shriver once told me that she believed Nebraska’s Kerrey would end up being another “Lion of the Senate” like her brother, then-Senator Edward Kennedy, Massachusetts’ Senator for forty years. Now, Shriver’s political forecast seems prophetic.

That is a verbatim quote from Eunice Kennedy Shriver, one of America’s most ardent Pro-Life champions.

If the uber-Catholic, Pro-Life Eunice Kennedy Shriver believed in Bob Kerrey, so too can each and every concerned Pro-Life citizen and voter.
